Now I am closing in on retirement I am reviewing my current situation and have come to consider Private Medical Insurance and wanted to know whether there were plans specifically designed for older individuals?

The good news is that as someone who is close to retirement you will still be able to put cover in place. There are a vast range of products on offer, some of which are specific Senior Private Health Insurance plans.
Times have changed and most insurers now will allow you to join a scheme up until age 75 and continue cover from there for as long as you need.
It’s not a secret that the risk of becoming unwell increases with age though. So, it is important to understand that premiums for health insurance in retirement can be quite high. However, some providers which offer Senior Health Insurance, will often allow you to remove certain aspects of cover. They may also give the option of including larger excesses to help bring the cost down.
We advise you to compare a few standard products which are open to all ages with those that are specific to a certain age group. Depending on your requirements from the cover a standard health insurance plan which is open to all could well end up more appropriate.
As with any policy, senior health plans tend to be made up of a core level of inpatient cover, a set level of outpatient cover and additional benefits. Most plans will cover inpatient treatment in full and offer varying degrees of outpatient cover.
