Is Normal Pregnancy Covered by Private Health Insurance?

We are thinking about starting a family and I am considering all my options. If we were to take out a Private Medical Insurance plan would I be able to use it for normal pregnancy? Touch wood it doesn’t happen but would I also be able to use it for any complications?

Generally speaking the major insurers providing Private Health Insurance in the UK do not cover normal pregnancy on even their most comprehensive medical plans.

The majority of policies offer a level of cover for complications in childbirth; however, there are stipulations on many of the plans regarding how long you need to have held the plan before you are eligible to make a pregnancy-related claim.

It is important to read any insurer’s terms in full to understand the eligibility criteria and limitations of cover with regards to complications in childbirth as they vary from insurer to insurer.
