Does My Private Health Insurance Cover Me for Routine Dental Treatment?

I go to a private dentist for check-ups and to see the hygienist and pay for the treatment out of my own pocket. I have Private Medical Insurance and wanted to know whether I could claim back any of these costs on my plan?

It is important to look through the policy schedule of your existing plan to confirm whether routine dental treatment is covered.

As a standard, routine dental treatment is not covered on a personal Medical Insurance plan. However, a number of insurers do offer an additional option to bolt on a routine dental treatment and optical benefit.

Dental & Optical Benefit

The bolt on dental and optical benefit tends not to affect your core health insurance plan – it often works as a separate health cash plan which provides a set level of cover for routine dental treatment, say £200 per annum.

Most dental and optical bolt on options work as a health cash plan. Should you require a dental check-up or need to see the hygienist you would have your required treatment, pay for the treatment yourself and then claim the cost back from your insurer.

To confirm the process of using the dental and optical benefit it is best to consult your policy schedule or call your insurer.

It is also important to note whether your dental and optical benefit also has a separate excess to that set on you core Health Insurance cover.
