Is Income Protection Available on a Zero Hours Contract?

Is Income Protection available on a zero hours contract? I work on a zero hour contract, is there any unemployment / sick pay cover I can get, as is the case for the self-employed?

With regards to the sickness insurance side of the plan most insurers would only be interested in seeing evidence of your earnings upon making a claim. For example, they may want to see your tax return or pay slips to prove that you are covered within their limits (which ranges from 50% to 70% of pre-tax earnings).

However, there are some insurers that do not require any evidence of earnings so even if your income is low you can still gain sufficient cover provided that you work over 16 hours per week. Thus, for sickness insurance cover it is possible to gain protection (you are best speaking to one of our advisers though to get the right plan).

For redundancy / unemployment cover most insurers have very strict claiming requirements if you’re self employed or a contract worker so we do not provide advice on these plans for these workers.

I hope that helps. Feel free to call us to run through if you need some support.
