Does Critical Illness Insurance Cover Motorbike Riding?

I’m 43 years old and looking at taking out Critical Illness Cover. I drive a motorbike to work and back and sometimes on a weekend. Would any insurance companies accept me?

No exclusion for driving a motorbike for general transport reasons

The short answer is yes, if you drive a motorbike for general transport reasons then there is usually no exclusion for a future claim on a Critical Illness Insurance policy if you suffer an injury while on your motorbike.

If you have a motorbike accident in the future and the injury was serious enough to meet the definition of a claim, such as total permanent disability or a brain injury that disables you, then you should be able to claim.

Motorbike driving for sport

If you compete in motorbike racing, however, or speedway or motor-cross racing, this would generally be excluded from a future claim.

This is because this is a competitive motor sport and is more inherently dangerous. As such, it would have been more likely to result in one or more future claims on the policy.

The importance of speaking with an expert

What I would recommend is speaking to an adviser, like Drewberry, to ensure you have a Critical Illness Cover policy that pays out for injuries you’re particularly likely to suffer when riding your motorbike, such as loss of a single limb.
