Can Critical Illness Insurance Cover Pre-Existing Conditions?

I’ve had a couple of medical conditions in the past and was wondering if I could still be eligible for Critical Illness Cover and if so, would these be excluded if I were to make a claim?

Critical Illness insurance and Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, this means you may or may not get cover (at all or just for that particular condition). Alternatively, there may be an increase on the premium due to the increased health risk.

For example, if you have had mental health issues in the past, this may mean there will be an exclusion on the Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) element of the critical Illness policy.

Where exclusions are specific and defined at the outset of the policy such an exclusion for TPB should not have an impact on the key illnesses which Critical Illness Insurance covers, such as various types of cancers, heart attacks and strokes.

Different insurers vary in the way they look at a pre-existing condition. For this reason is it very difficult to determine what will be covered as it highly depends on your past medical history.

Every application for Critical Illness Insurance is unique and different insurers have different appetites for risk. As such, it’s worth popping our us a call if you have any pre-existing conditions so you can speak to one of our expert advisers. They will be able to determine what the likely decision from the insurer would be and find out how any pre-existing conditions could affect your policy.
