Each year, 7.8 million working days are lost due to musculoskeletal problems. Most of us are likely to have either suffered from the dreaded “bad back” or “dodgy knee”, resulting in time off work. I’m no exception.
One morning during my usual workout, my back suddenly jolted, leaving me in a lot of pain. I went to my NHS GP for advice. which is where things started to become tricky.
My GP suspected I had either had a bulging, herniated or slipped disc in my back.
While they said they could put me on a waiting list to have an MRI scan, this was a step towards surgical intervention and they’d wanted to manage it with physiotherapy first.
So, still in pain, I left the surgery to wait for my physiotherapy appointment… and kept waiting.
It was three months before the NHS physiotherapist got in contact about an appointment. Even then, I was shocked to find the appointment they offered me was for six months in the future. Despite reiterating the impact this was having on my life, they still couldn’t see me any sooner.
At this point, I decided to make used of my Bupa Health Insurance policy through work. This gave me speedy access to private medical care, with Bupa picking up the bill.
I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. I got all the information I needed, calling them one evening after work to start the process.
After a brief discussion of my symptoms, the claims management team diagnosed me there and then over the phone. They immediately authorised a course of physiotherapy, with my first session booked for 9am the following morning (I could even have started my at 8pm that same evening if I’d wanted!).
After paying the policy excess of £100, I was ready for my full assessment with the Bupa-approved physiotherapist.
After learning more about the problem, the physiotherapist examined me and gave me some exercises to do to help with my back pain. He then arranged for me to have at least nine more follow-up sessions.
It was all so simple and easy and (most importantly) really fast. There was no waiting around, and I was on my way to a course of at least 10 physio sessions – all for an excess of just £100.
It was a much-needed relief to start making positive steps towards recovery, and I’m so grateful Bupa was there when I needed them.
