I’m looking at taking out Critical Illness Cover to pay off my mortgage should I be too ill to work. My passion is sailing and I was just wondering if this would be covered in my policy?
There are two key facts that the insurers will need to know when it comes to sailing. Is there any racing involved and/or are you taking part in any trans-ocean sailing?
If the answer is ‘no’ to both of those questions, then there is a good chance that the insurer will not feel the need to place a sailing exclusion on your Critical Illness Insurance policy.
However, if the answer is ‘yes’ to either of those questions, there may be an exclusion placed on the policy for any claims relating to sailing.
If your sailing is done on more of an ad hoc basis and is purely for leisure purposes in domestic waters then this would be considered a lesser risk to the insurers.
However, if you are engaging in sailing at a competitive level or sailing across oceans, this is a much greater risk to the insurer which is why they put exclusions on sailing in certain circumstances.
