I’ve recently been ill and it’s made me wonder if I should take out an insurance to pay off my mortgage should I suffer from a serious illness. One that I’m looking at is Critical Illness Insurance. Is there an excess period for this type of cover before I could make a claim?
This is a good question, one which we do come across regularly. With other insurances, typically, there are certain waiting periods before a claim can be made.
However, with Critical Illness Insurance, there are no waiting periods or ‘qualifying periods’ – you can claim as soon as your policy has been underwritten and you have been notified that your policy is live.
The steps of setting up a policy are very simple. You will have to run through an application form with an adviser to let the insurer know about the risk they are about to take on.
Generally, if the insurer is happy to take on that risk you will get a decision right away. If you are notified the policy is live then you are covered right away.
In terms of a claim, here at Drewberry we understand that at a claims stage this can be a stressful time.
This is why we provide support when dealing with the claims process. We always encourage our clients to contact us first if they need to make a claim as this often results in a smoother process.

Drew was incredibly helpful all the way along and very responsive and patient with any questions I had (which were many). He was able to get me a much better deal on my new health insurance than I had been able to get online. A success all round!
