One way to search for a regulated, qualified adviser is through the website Unbiased.co.uk, which has thousands of advisers listed on its site. You put in your postcode and it will come up with advisers in your area. However, a telephone based adviser may work out more cost effective. You can also search based on which area you need advice on.
The site VouchedFor.co.uk also lists financial advisers, and you can read reviews and ratings by existing clients. The Institute of Financial Planning lists certified financial planners and accredited firms at Financialplanning.org.uk
Recommendations from friends can also be a good way to find an adviser. You can check if an adviser is authorised to give advice on the Financial Conduct Authority Register at http://www.fca.org.uk/register/
