Does Critical Illness Insurance Cover Overseas Travel?

I do lots of overseas travelling for both business and vacation. I’ve started looking at insurances to pay of outstanding loans if I’m unable to work. I’m thinking about Critical Illness insurance. If something was to happen when I’m abroad, would a claim still be valid?

Most providers will cover you anywhere in the world

The great news with Critical Illness Insurance is that the majority of insurers will provide cover anywhere in the world. This means regardless of the country you travel to, if you were to suffer one of the specified illnesses or injuries whilst travelling overseas, you can claim.

Most insurers do however require that any diagnosis or supporting medical evidence must be obtained in a specified country area, usually Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand or North America.

So for example if you had a heart attack whilst travelling in Asia, you may have to return to Europe for treatment and for the insurer to obtain medical claims evidence.

Visiting high risk countries

In certain instances exclusions may apply based on past or future travel plans, usually if there are firm intentions to visit higher risk countries where there is war or civil conflict, or a high incidence of infectious diseases. As all Critical Illness Insurance policies are underwritten upfront, prior to accepting the application the insurer will ask thorough questions about travel plans and will notify you of any special terms.
