Expatriates Yearn for Healthcare from Home

28/04/2020

A recent survey by Bupa International reveals that nearly half of all expatriates believe the standard of healthcare is worse in their new country.

The online survey was completed by over 1,000 expatriates, in addition to 44% perceiving lower standards of healthcare in their new country, one in five expats stated they would rather be treated outside their country of origin or current residence if they fell seriously ill.

One of the most interesting findings was that one in five expats had felt their health has deteriorated since moving abroad. The countries topping the tables of where people would most like to be treated should they be given the choice are Singapore, followed by the USA, South Africa and the UK.

Dr Sneh Khemka, of Bupa International, said: “While Singapore is perceived to have the best healthcare by a good quarter of expats, the truth is that while there are many excellent hospitals, the quality of healthcare in Singapore varies, as it does in every country around the world.

“With such variance it is important to have access to expert medical advice when residing abroad to ensure you are directed to the most appropriate facilities.”

There are many comprehensive worldwide health insurance products available to expats and individuals working abroad should something happen.
